Passionate About Iowa City
and the Moms Who Live Here.

Thrifty, Frugal, Cheap…

If you scan the dictionary for those three words, surely you’ll see a picture of me!!! Ha! I find GREAT pleasure in scouring thrift shops and garage sales for the perfect little treasures! Who doesn’t get a euphoric and blissful feeling when you pull up to the checkout with a cartload of “junk” and only pay a few dollars for it!?! Okay, I shouldn’t say junk. I don’t suffer from hoarding and I’d like to think I’m quite decent at picking through the countless items to find the REALLY good deal. And I do firmly stand by the quote, “One’s man’s trash is another man’s treasure!” However, I may have a problem with stopping at every garage sale or resale store I see.  After all, it would be absurd, maybe even a sin, to pass up a Goodwill or Salvation Army when there are countless bargains to be had! Find them we must!!! (Hence why my husband strategically maps out routes that avoid these wonderful stores because he knows the abundant hours I could spend in them.) Guilty as charged!

One of my favorite gal-pals-dates is to hit up Plato’s Closet to spiff up my wardrobe and then head on over to Stuff Etc. to rummage through other people’s abandoned loot! I cannot possibly explain to you how much I love Iowa City and the surrounding areas because of their copious amounts of thrift and resale stores! (Cue the music: “Heaven, I’m in heaven…!”) Hahaha, seriously though, I can easily make a whole day of frugal shopping at these fine establishments!

TaraclothesA few weeks ago, a friend and I went thrift shopping. While rummaging through the kid’s clothes, I spotted the most adorable pair of Old Navy colored skinny jeans for my 2 year old. Then to my sheer delight, I discovered 3 more pairs! Ahhh!!! Just last month I had been admiring these exact same pants at the mall, but I was definitely not prepared to pay almost $20 a pair. Guess what… they were only $2 a piece and hardly looked used at all! SCORE!!! Then, don’t even get me started on the stinkin’ adorable skirts, cardigans, and matching tees I found! My daughter would surely be stylin’, all thanks to the super awesome mom (or Grandma) who donated them to Goodwill! A sincere thank you and a big shout out to whomever you are, YOU ROCK!

I’ve found such great pieces for pennies on the dollar for what they charge in the retail stores. And to some people’s utter surprise, A LOT of the items I’ve purchased are name brand… Puma (check out the super cute toddler digs that I scored at GoodWill!), North Face, Hollister, Children’s Place, Gap, the list goes on and on! You just have to employ a little patience and determination, and I know you, too, will begin to find some amazing deals when you’re out and about! Shop on, barganistas!!! =)

Taraclothes2I’m certain there are tons of deals yet to be discovered, so please, let me in on your frugal shopping secrets: Where are your favorite thrift or resale stores to shop at in the Iowa City area? What has been the best treasure you’ve ever found? What are your tried-and-true methods for seeking out the best goodies on a table/shelf/rack of chaos?
