The {Ugly} Beautiful Truth of Going Sans Make-Up and Hair!!!

Hi, this… is me.

 taramakeup

This is probably how you’d see me at any Moms Blog event, school carnival, Sunday morning worship, a MOPs meeting, or any other “special occasion.” Hair done, make-up on, nails painted all cute, and clothes looking somewhat fashionable. I appear to have myself all put together.

But brace yourself.

Because this… is the real me.  (Yup, just screen-shotted myself from my laptop cam!)

Yeah, I know. I give you permission to cringe a bit.  But this is how I look almost all of the time. My poor husband, right?! Haha!

The truth is, I HATE “getting ready!” No seriously, it is a chore that 95% of the time, I will opt out of doing. Can anyone else relate?! Well today, I’m prepared to let it all out.

I’m that mom who hovers in the corner hallway wearing my huge bug-eyed sunglasses indoors to hide my no-make-up-eyes and a large hat covering my air-dried and split-ended ponytail while picking my kiddo up from Kindergarten. In my head, I’m invisible to you. No one can see me. These oversized accessories are hiding the fact that I look like crap today! Ha!

You’re all busy mommies, you know how it is in the mornings: you dress your munchkins, brush their pearly whites, pack your husband’s lunch for work, whip up some breakfast shakes, make sure the homework folders are tucked away in the correct backpack, and get them all scooted out the door and ready for the day. But wait, someone has been neglected. You’re still dawning yesterday’s yoga pants and a grungy old 5k t-shirt with your hair slicked back in a messy bun and “left-over make-up” smeared under your eyes. Surely you will step back inside and take a few moments to redeem yourself before you walk them to class. Me? Nope.  ‘Aint nobody got time fo’ that!

Don’t get me wrong. I completely understand (and agree) that it is important to take care of yourself and to feel confident and comfortable no matter where you go and what you look like.  But can we be honest?! Blow-drying your hair, putting on eye make-up, and squeezing into those trendy skinny jeans is a time-consuming task.  And us moms have “better” things to be doing with our time.

I say we start a revolution. Instead of secretly rolling those “judging eyes” at the mom who shows up in mis-matched flip-flops and sweatpants to drop her toddler off at preschool, or that momma who is sans make-up at the grocery store buying school-snacks late on a Sunday night, or even that fellow mom who meets up for a play date in a spit-up stained shirt with yesterday’s greasy hair and flaked mascara on her cheeks…. let’s praise those beautiful women! Let’s give them a genuine smile and an “I’ve been there” nod that shows them that we know taking care of a family and yourself is daunting and relentless; and that you understand where they’re coming from. Do you know what I like about seeing “that” mom? I can tell where her priorities lay.

I don’t know about you, but I’m going to save that curling-ironed hair, flawless make-up, and adorable maxidress with the skin-tight spanx underneath for a date night with my husband… where we can both appreciate all the hard work that went into it! Until then, I’m going to rub my itchy eyes all I want and not have to worry about smearing my eyeliner. I’m going to sit out on my deck in my sweaty workout clothes because darn-it, I just don’t feel like showering yet. And I’m gonna pull-up to the school parking lot with a smile on my face and a head scarf covering my hair because it’s quick and easy and I like it!

And, I’m going to remember that we are all beautifully and wonderfully made.  And if our heart is gorgeous on the inside, it won’t matter what our outward physical appearance is. So go, stand proud in all of your un-make-uped glory and give a shout out to all those fabulous mommas who continue to bless others with their giving and selfless sentiment! =)

Her two boys, Simeon (6) and Solomon (5), and sassy 3-year-old daughter, Surion, help keep her on her toes. She is proud to call Kalona her home and settled in quickly after moving from central Iowa a few years ago to launch a ministry in the IC area. Her family is an avid supporter of all the local “Hawks”… Go Black and Gold! She claims that exercise is not her strong suit, but continues to condition her body (mostly through running) in hopes that one day, it will come naturally to her. She enjoys being creative through crafting and DIY projects, and admits that her body is a canvas and artistic outlet with her many tattoos and piercings. Tara has a special place in her heart for “finding a good deal,” and can often be found scouring local thrift stores for all sorts of wonderful treasures! She is truly passionate about litter-removal and recycling and hopes her obsession will rub off on the munchkins so they can lead a “clean” life in their future. Lastly, and most importantly, Tara has a heart for the Lord and is thrilled to be involved with her community MOPs group. =)

  1. I love this!!! I’m always trying to get cute outfits together for the kids or doing my daughters hair or changing bottles or diapers. I have 3 children 2 and under. If I’m completely dressed (meaning shoes, or the shirt that’s supposed to go over my tank) it’s a good day. This made me feel much better.

  2. I love this! I can SO relate! I am make-up-less well, pretty much most of the time. Thanks for sharing your real-ness. I pray it gives others the courage to just be themselves and let the non-essentials go.

  3. Agreed! I have a 5 year old daughter and I want to teach her what you said, that real beauty comes from within. That she is beautiful on the outside too because she was made in Gods image. She doesn’t need to get all dolled up to be beautiful. The only way I can do that is to truly believe it for myself. And that when I wear makeup, its my choice and because I want to, not for others. So take off that hat and sunglasses and show the world Gods beautiful work! It is NOT cringeworthy.

  4. Old post but nice to read! A couple of thoughts, though.

    1. Beauty is never in our make up or clothes. Beauty is in our attitude, in our confidence, in our smile. Picking up your kid from school with sweatpants, messy hair and no make up. Iugh. Now add a smile because you are eager to see them and give them a hug. Walk with confidence. Say hi and talk to other moms/dads/nannies waiting. Not so bad anymore and you suddenly feel better.
Let’s go back to Tara’s pictures. She is beautiful. Why does she seem less beautiful on the second picture? Because she is making a funny/ugly face. The same would happen if she was only serious. But just with a smile, with the beautiful smile of the first picture, she would look great.

    2. We are our worst enemy. We look at the mirror and see all ugliness and more, it makes us sad, insecure… and then it is when we look bad because we lost our confidence, our smile. Now think about how much attention we pay to how others look. Do you stare at their faces for 5 minutes straight looking for flaws like you do to your mirror-self? I am sure not. Well, surprise-surprise, they do not do it either. Do you stare at someone wearing sweatpants and their husband’s t-shirt? Same thing. Do you judge another mom because she is not looking ready for a photo session? Of course not. And neither do they! Now for the “bad looks” we might get. Are we sure we are the reason of that stranger’s bad face? Are we so important for that stranger to cause a bad reaction on them? Probably not but, if we are, is it really because of our lack of grocery-shopping-clothing-style or because we are acting weird while trying not to be seen?

    Oh! I remembered something else!
    3. Those stupid hormones. You decided to wear that outfit you love and wore a thousand times feeling great. You put it on, go to your “bestie” the mirror and… Iugh! What happened? It looks awful! Well, hold on, breathe deep and go with it anyway. If it looked awesome yesterday, it most likely looks awesome today, it is just those hormones playing games with your brain again!

Now, even knowing by heart all this, I still have to fight feeling less confident when I think I could look better. I still wake up an hour earlier to get ready before my daughter wakes up and it is all about her. And I never show myself to the world without covering the dark circles under my eyes. It is like my bra or earrings, I feel naked without them! Women! We are amazingly weird! 😉
