Weekend Wednesday: June 6-7

It is going to be a beautiful weekend!  Here are my top 5 picks of things to do with your family this weekend.  It is jam packed full of so much fun!!! Enjoy!

Weekend Wednesday

Saturday, June 6th

2015 Iowa Arts Festival  All Day.  Have you ever been?  Summer of the Arts in Iowa City has so many events throughout the summer for all ages.  Saturday at the Iowa Arts Festival they have not only events going on for adults but also it is Kids Day!  Really, it is so much fun and I encourage you to grab all the kids, pack a picnic lunch, or taste many of the delicious foods offered in Iowa City and head downtown for a day full of fun!

Free Fishing Weekend 10:00 a.m.-Noon.  Have you ever wanted to take the kids fishing, but may not have the equipment?  Well, you are in luck!  The first weekend in June is free fishing weekend (you don’t need a fishing license).  Head on over to Liberty Center Pond in North Liberty where individuals from Scheels, the DNR, and North Liberty Parks and Recreation Department will be there to help you learn to fish.  Free fishing weekend is for Iowa Residents only and happens the first weekend in June on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at lakes and ponds across the state!  If you can’t make it to this event, you can rent out fishing poles at the North Liberty Rec center for free…so you still have a chance to go catch some fish with your kids!

Rhubarb Day 9:00 a.m.-all day.  Come join the Amana Colonies for Rhubarb Day!  The Amana Colonies are famous for Rhubarb pie and wine (known as Peistengle  in the Colonies) and on this Saturday we will celebrate all things rhubarb (and somethings that aren’t).  Not as large as Wurst Festival or Oktoberfest, this mini-fest is a great time to experience the Colonies with something unique happening at the same time.

Sunday, June 7th

Sunday Fun Day 2:00-4:00 p.m.  Fun activities for families to enjoy together at the Iowa City Public Library.  Come make superhero gliders and create your own superhero story.  This would be a great time to sign up for the summer reading program!  And as a reminder…Coralville and North Liberty also have summer reading programs.  A lot of fun activities are happening at all the libraries this summer for babies through adult age. For a list of all the libraries in the Corridor, click here.

Nature Play with the Iowa Children’s Museum 1:30-3:00 p.m. Have you ever found yourself watching a bird or noticing how beautiful a flower is? This appreciation and curiosity towards nature is the first step to becoming a Backyard Naturalist. Create a journal, start your research and earn a Backyard Naturalist button during this Nature Play!  Explore your world with this free outdoor program. Active learning activities get the whole family involved in scientific exploration and observation. There is no charge to join but registration is required.
