Another gorgeous weekend is upon us!  Head outside with the family and enjoy some of my top picks of area events!  There are some fabulous events happening both Saturday and Sunday…which are FREE!

Saturday, September 12th

Meet the Miniatures and Giant Loft Sale 10-12pm.  Stop by Synergy Gymnastics Imagination Station to meet the miniature rescue horses, feed them a treat, then go up to the loft for a giant sale: Halloween costumes, toys, BRIO bridges, puppets and both a mini and full-size puppet stage, furniture, games, pirate gear, and much more.  The miniature horses will be there from 10-11.  Cost is $5 per child.  For more information, please contact Debbie Dunn at [email protected].

Wilson’s Apple Orchard: Song of September 10-6pm.  Take our trailer ride out to the orchard to pick your own Song of September apples, a customer favorite at the orchard, or pick some up in our farm store. We also have lots of other varieties available pre-picked or to pick as well as a limited quantity of pies made with Song of September apples, other pies, turnovers, apple cider donuts, apple cider slushies and fresh pressed apple cider available in gallons and half gallons! The grill is open from 11:30am – 2:00pm serving hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches.

Michael’s Kids Club Bird Feeders 10-12pm.  They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included.

Game Room & Gak 11am.  Come on over to the Coralville Rec Center for a lot of fun! Enjoy billiards, foosball, ping pong and other game room activities and make your own gak – a wonderful, slimy concoction of fun!  Event is FREE!

Monarch Butterfly Tagging 1-3pm.  Join Johnson County Conservation staff for an afternoon of monarch fun and citizen science at Kent Park.  The event will start with a brief family-friendly indoor presentation, and will be followed with plenty of outdoor time to collect and tag monarchs. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and to bring water and bug spray. This is a free event with no registration necessary.

Sunday, September 13th

Nature Play: Honk, Squawk, Tweet 1:30-3pm.  What do you know about birds? Join us for this Nature Play and learn about birds, their beaks, their feet, where they live, what they like to eat and so much more.  Explore your world with this free outdoor program. Active learning activities get the whole family involved in scientific exploration and observation. There is no charge to join but registration is required.

Big Day of Play 3-5pm.  Part of PLAYvolution’s week of play, our Big Day of Play is an opportunity to bring your family to S.T. Morrison Park for fun and games. Music, yoga, giant game of Twister, life-size Hungry Hungry Hippos, bounce house, Minute to Win It games, giant game of kickball and MORE! And it’s all free! Come out and play!

Annual Air Show 1-4:30pm.   Come join us the Aerohawks for a free family fun event!  This is the annual airshow and events will include parachute drops, freestyle flying competition, helicopter demonstration, candy bomb drop for the kids, war birds, giant scale aerobatics, jet demonstration, and the main event–up to 10 airplanes racing to cut a single streamer!  Gates open at 12 and the show is from 1-4:30pm.  Concessions will be availbale so plan on spending the entire afternoon with the Aerohawks!  Event is taking place at 3862 Hebl Ave SW, Iowa City.  This is definitely an event you will not want to miss!!!
