As many of you already know, we are so lucky to live in an area that is FULL of amazing preschools for our little ones! Today we are excited to share with you a little bit more about Preucil Preschool in Iowa City, which offers a play-based approach to the fine arts. Check out our interview with their staff here, and be sure to visit their website and Facebook page as well!
In January of 1963, Doris Preucil began one of the first five Suzuki violin programs in the United States, and in 1975 opened the Preucil School of Music. In 1976, a preschool program was formed to provide music development for young children. In 2002, the Preucil School built an additional facility, known as the North Campus, offering space for enlarged enrollment and housing the expanded fine arts preschool program.
Tell us about your school (teachers, principal, students, etc.)
We are a fine arts play-based preschool. We offer a nurturing and supportive environment for children to explore and express ideas. Our teachers are all highly trained caring educators. They have degrees and advanced degrees in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Art, and Music. Our students are all unique and extremely interesting! We get to know each child individually and learn about their interests and curiosities. It is these curiosities that are a springboard for further investigation and learning in our arts-rich environment.
Because we believe play is so valuable for children, we offer a wide array of rich play activities including, but not limited to, blocks, kitchen/dress-up, playdough, animals, water table, castle, dollhouse, roads/cars and many manipulatives. The arts are a vital aspect of our curriculum and are interwoven into our day. Our art studio is open throughout the day and staffed by an art teacher. It offers a place for children to explore art materials and creatively express their ideas. We have daily music and/or movement–our music teachers work on a wide variety of music with the children, developing their voices and fostering a joy of music. We also enjoy time outside in our large playground which includes both playground equipment and a large green/natural space complete with sandbox/mud kitchen, garden, play stage, and climbing logs.
What is unique about Preucil?
I believe our unique play-based emergent curriculum, highly trained faculty, and approach to the arts makes us unique. We blend play with art-making, music, and investigation. At any given moment, we could have a child designing a house for a stuffed dog, a group of children building a rocket, while others put on a show. All of this happens within the context of rich play schemes.
What is your staff most passionate about?
Our staff is passionate about the education of not just children’s minds, but their spirits as well. To quote Dr. Suzuki, “It is necessary to be concerned about educating a really beautiful spirit.”
We are expanding our afternoons and adding early mornings! But mostly we want families to know we are here, ready to get to know you and your child. We’ll get messy, play hard, make art, and sing our hearts out.
What is your favorite part about being a school in Iowa City/the corridor area?
We meet so many wonderful families and children in this area. Iowa City/corridor families are so interested and passionate about their children’s education and development. We enjoy working together with families to give their children the best possible childhood.
