Make the World a Better Place

While trying not to be too political, I am deeply upset and disappointed with this election.  It is clear that no matter what happened, many Americans were going to be.   I have been trying to wrap my mind around all of this, and for me, I need to have a plan.  I need to find good in the world and make more of it. Something I think everyone can agree on is that we want the world to be a better place.   As moms we all want our children to be happy, and that starts with us, with home.  How do we do this?  Here are some ideas.

How Moms Can Make the World a Better Place

1. Give your time.

Volunteer for organizations helping those less fortunate, advancing rights of those being oppressed and advocating for those who need a voice. Pick up trash on the sidewalk.  Recycle.  Rake your neighbor’s leaves.  Take a casserole to the family who lost a loved one.  Hold the door open for the person behind you.  Here is a great list of ways you can volunteer and serve locally, right now, in our community.

2. Give your money.

There are so many organizations that do so much good.  The issue?  They need money.  Money for toilet paper, the gas bill, and other unsexy things to keep things running AS WELL as paying for the actual things that go into the hands of those who need it.  If you can’t give a lot that is OK; every penny can really make a difference.  Choose a cause that makes the world a better place, and give as generously as you can. 3. Be kind.

This can be hard. No one is perfect, but we can all improve. Resist anger and hate; be gentle with one another.  Be kind to the waiter who keeps messing up your order, to your cranky coworker, to the demanding boss, to your spouse who left his dirty clothes on the floor, to your cranky kids who missed their nap, to the man who cut you off in traffic.  To those with different religions, races, genders and political beliefs, be kind.  Be the bigger person.

4. Put yourself in other people’s shoes.

What is best for me is not best for everyone. We are all so different, and we must appreciate that and work together to do what is best for all.  We can’t be united if we all look out for #1.

5. Raise your children well.

Teach your kids to be good people who give their time and money. Raise people who are kind, compassionate, and advocates for others.  It is important for them to not only value their education, but to be lifelong learners and to give back to the world that gave so much to them.  Help them be grateful for what they have.
