Mommy’s Real Christmas List

My daughter asked me the other day what I wanted for Christmas. I don’t know about you, but since becoming a mom my thinking has shifted from thinking about my wants and needs to my children’s wants and needs. I can hardly go into a store and pick something out for myself anymore, but that may be partly because I don’t want to admit how much my body has changed over the years and partly because I feel guilty buying myself something nice. Anyway, it really got me thinking–if I could pick a few gifts just for me, what would they be?

What Moms REALLY Want for Christmas

1. Sleep

The first gift I thought of was sleep. My oldest child is almost 10; therefore, I have not slept an entire uninterrupted night in almost 10 years. I miss sleep. I miss waking up on my own, not by little grouchy people demanding pop-tarts and milk. So kids, for Christmas I want to sleep all night in my own bed, without your cute little sweaty bodies kicking me, and I want to wake up on my own, as late as I want to, possibly to breakfast in bed.

2. Help with Laundry

Keeping along the same lines, gift number two would be my sweet kids learning how to wash, fold, and put away their laundry. Now obviously I know this is one of those gifts I’m probably going to have to give myself because, let’s face it, I’m the only one who knows how to work the washing machine. It also may be kind of hard to get my three-year-olds to get the system down. Big kids be warned, Mama is teaching you how to help with the laundry. At the very least you will be sorting your dirty clothes and putting away the clean stuff, and maybe folding socks, too. Wish me luck!

3. No Sharing

Part of being a mom is sharing. Sharing food, personal space, and any possession that my kids think would be cool to play with. For one day I don’t want to have to share. Gift number three is giving me one day where I don’t have anyone stealing anything off of my plate, no taking my French fries after you’ve eaten all of yours, and no sticking your hands in my cup to take ice while there’s still liquid in the cup. I want to be able to find my iPad or phone because they were exactly where I left them, with none of the typical sticky fingerprints present. Call me selfish, but for just one day I don’t want to share.

4. Back Rub

Now this next thing, well, it’s more payback than anything else. My kids’ favorite thing is to be tickled. Backs, arms, legs, feet, stomach, doesn’t matter where as long as Mom is tickling them. Guess what Kiddies, it’s Mama’s turn! It’s time for me to get my back tickled and, hey, if you want to throw a foot massage in there, I won’t turn you down.

5. Sweet Family Memories

One last thing on my list is I want to make a memory with my family. Our kids are growing up so fast and time is just blowing by. I want us to take some time to be together. We don’t need to go to Disneyland or anything crazy like that. Let’s just spend a weekend not thinking about work or things that need to get done around the house. Let’s play games, go to a restaurant that we all can enjoy, and maybe go get ice cream as a family. Maybe we could go for a drive and see a town that we haven’t seen before or check out a park we’ve never been to.

I just want to have some fun, quality time as a family, because really, that is the most important thing in the world to me: my family.
