Mom-Worthy Summer Shoes

Finally! It’s time to bring our feet out of hibernation, buff those nasty heels, and break out the bright summer polish for our toes. I love shoes for so many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that no matter how we feel about our bodies from the knees up, they always fit. I used to have just one criteria for shoe shopping: Does it look good? I’d hobble through the summer heat in high heeled strappy sandals, armed with a stack of bandaids in my purse for the inevitable blisters. More recently, however, I’m looking for comfort and style to keep up with my daughter, stay cool at the office, and step out for happy hour with my hubby all summer long. Out with the Crocs, ladies! I’ve found some cool and comfortable styles that you can wear all summer long.

1. For the workplace that allows for a more casual summer attire, I love the Clarks Women’s Casylynn Cheryl Wedge Sandal. Despite the fact that this shoe has more names than the new Princess, it’s actually comfortable! These are not your mama’s Clarks, but they live up to their reputation for comfort. And, the wedge allows you to have some height without killing your feet.

2. If you volunteered for the end of the year class trip to the zoo (silly mommy!), slip on a pair of Skechers Performance Go Walk. I have a pair in denim, but they have fun colors including hot pink for summer! The insole is made of some kind of memory foam magic…ahhhhh.

3. Nothing says summer like flip flops and my favorites are the Reef Stargazer. For around $26 you can get a good quality pair that will last more than one year. Resist the temptation to buy the $1 Old Navy styles that you pick up for your kiddos and spring for a fun neutral like the taupe and champagne (hello, age-appropriate sparkle!).

4. When the kiddos are worn out from the pool, call the sitter, grab your partner, and step out in something flirty, like these Jessica Simpson (no judgement) Anika Espadrilles. The espadrille makes it casual enough for downtown Iowa City, but the bright floral dresses it up just enough to order grown-up drinks.

5. And, for the ultimate in comfort, there’s nothing like a Dansko. If you’ve worn Dansko, you know what I’m talking about. I was giddy when I slipped on the Joanie sandal. I chose the slightly iridescent “carnivale” pattern, but this faux snakeskin may be my new fave. If you’ve never ventured past the boring but safe brown or black sandal, this is a great transition into a more stylish neutral. They are at the top of the budget here, but totally worth it for their work to play versatility.

What’s your favorite summer style?
