Another gorgeous weekend is ahead of us and it’s the last weekend of summer 2015!  Head out with the family and enjoy some of the great events happening in the Corridor! Here are my top picks of this weekend’s events!

Saturday, September 19th

Monarch Tagging & Seminar at Forevergreen Nursery in North Liberty 10am. Have you ever wondered how something as delicate as a butterfly travels over 1500 miles to Mexico?  Participants in this event will learn how Monarchs are tagged, registered, and released so scientists can study and protect their migration routes.  You will have an opportunity to tag a butterfly, receive a certificate with the codes and information on University of Kansas’s Monarch Watch program.  This hands on presentation, is a great opportunity for all ages to learn about Monarchs, their habitat, life cycle and amazing migration. Kathleen Ziemer of Butterfliz of Iowa has been raising butterflies and leading educational seminars since 1999 and is returning for the 7th year to lead this event. THIS IS A GREAT FAMILY ACTIVITY. The program will begin at 10:00 and lasts approximately one hour.  Tagging will take place from 9:30 to 10:00 then will continue after the program.  The butterfly release will follow the last tagging session.  This is an outdoor event with limited seating, bring your chairs.  In the event of rain it will be held under shelter.  Recommended for adults and children ages 4 and up. Cost to tag a Monarch butterfly is $7.00.  There is no cost to attend the seminar the fee is only if you wish to tag and release a butterfly.

Lost Wolves Kids Workshop 1pm.  In the magical and imaginative world of children, animals play a major role. Wolves have been exterminated in Iowa since 1925 yet historically have been central to Iowa’s ecological history. In this workshop, children ages 5-12 will explore their relationship to wolves and their absence through drawing, movement and sound recordings. Drawings and sound recordings may be incorporated into a future video project of the instructor. Instructor: Corinne Teed Experience Level: Beginner, Ages 5-12 Cost: $0-$15 Sliding Scale to register, email [email protected].  Event it taking place at Public Space One. 

Explore Rotary Camp 10-12pm.  Families can hike through Rotary Camp Park and complete a nature scavenger hunt along the way!  This event is part of Coralville’s PLAYvolution.

Sunday, September 20th

Move it, Dig it, Do it 11-5pm.  Move It! Dig It! Do It! will be held September 20th at The Iowa Children’s Museum, both inside and outside with free admission to the museum and the outdoor activities and equipment all day! Move It! Dig It! Do It! is a community wide, family focused event that is an educational, fun-filled day focused on big equipment that moves providing a unique family entertainment experience! This special event allows families to get an up-close look at large construction and farming equipment, big trucks, and emergency vehicles, as well as dozens of games and activities to explore!

Music is the Word 2-4pm.  Iowa City Public Library’s MITW Musical Revue at The Englert Theatre marks the kickoff of nine months of special programming to welcome the University of Iowa School of Music to downtown Iowa City. Local performers are donating their talent to this great event for all ages. Confirmed acts: The Beggarmen with the Champagne Academy of Irish Dance; Kol Shira; Combined Efforts Theatre Men’s Choir; The Extra Credit Project; Girls Rock; The Recliners; That’s Entertainement; The City, Too; Chase Garrett; Andy Parrott, The Cedar County Cobras and members of the UI Pep Band. General admission tickets are available at the Library and the Englert for $10 each; children 5 and under free. Everyone must have a ticket for the performance, including free admission tickets for children 5 and under. Tickets may be purchased on the Englert website or in person at the Iowa City Public Library.

Inflatables at the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center 12-3pm.  The inflatables will be out for use today at Campus Recreation & Wellness Center! All times are noon – 3:00 p.m. Must be able to swim 25 yards proficiently, without stopping, and without goggles on prior prior to participating. No flotation devices are allowed. Please note, we will not have the slide available.
