ICMB’s 3rd Annual Moms Morning Out: Meet the Experts

Iowa City Moms Blog is thrilled to be partnering with The Family Dental Center for Bloom: our 3rd Annual Moms Morning Out event!! This year we are partnering with City Moms Blog Network to bring this event to moms across the country on the same day!! This year’s event will take place on Saturday, April 30th from 10:00-1:00 at the University Club in Iowa City! If you are expecting or have children ages infant through age 5, this event is perfect for you!! Today we want to introduce you to the wonderful local experts who will be participating in our expert panel discussion! Be sure to bring your questions because they are looking forward to answering them!! Wondering what to expect when you go in for delivery? Or how to handle an unexpected hospitalization? Curious as to when your child needs to start brushing their teeth? Or when sleepless nights should be a cause for concern? Maybe you’re wondering how to start saving for college? Write your questions down while you’re thinking about them and bring your notes along to the event!

Meet the Moms Morning Out Expert Panel

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Heather Anaya, DO, FACOG  Dr. AnayaDr. Anaya grew up in Michigan City, Indiana, and received her medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. She went on to complete her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. She completed additional fellowship training in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  Anaya’s practice includes high risk obstetrics, prenatal diagnosis, labor and delivery, and being an educator for medical students, residents and fellows. Anaya greatly enjoys taking care of women with high risk pregnancies in that every single day of her career is rewarding, inspiring and humbling. Outside of work, Anaya enjoys spending time with her husband Jorge and her two children, Chloe and Georgie. The Anaya family loves running (baby jogger and all!), soccer and travel. As a mom herself, Anaya shares with her patients a deep understanding of the joys, surprises and challenges of pregnancy and life beyond the postpartum time.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Bloom Expert Panelist Dr. Sarina MartiniSarina Martini, MD  Dr. Martini received her medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and went on to complete her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. She returned to Iowa City to join the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as a faculty member in 2015. Her goal as a provider is to help women feel empowered about their health and well-being. Dr. Martini loves being able to help women navigate life’s changes and challenges with education and care. In her spare time, the mother of two enjoys hiking, camping, and crafting.

Midwifery

Bloom Expert Panelist Christina ShuttersChristina Shutters, ARNP, CNM  Christina Shutters is a certified nurse midwife who grew up in Storm Lake and Keosauqua Iowa. Before joining the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 2013, she completed her midwife clinicals at Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, NC. Christina enjoys working with women and empowering them to make informed choices about their pregnancy and care. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband Tim and 2 1/2 year old son, Christian.

Pediatrics

Bloom Expert Panelist Dr. Joe BoysenJoseph Boysen, MD, FAAP  Dr. Boysen grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. After receiving his undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College in 1988, he attended the University of Iowa for medical school and completed his pediatric residency there. He joined Pediatric Associates in 1996 and has been providing primary care to patients ranging in age from newborns to college graduates. He find immense joy in making a difference in the lives of his patients and the friendships that ultimately form with patients and their parents. Interests include being the proud parent of two children, tennis, golf, exercise and playing in a local orchestra.

Dentistry

Bloom Expert Panelist Dr. Greg GilbaughGreg Gilbaugh, DDS  Hello.  I am Dr. Greg Gilbaugh.  I graduated from the University of Iowa  College of Dentistry in 1985, and completed residency training in Advanced General Dentistry in 1986.  I founded The Family Dental Center with a desire to bring together a team of highly skilled and caring people that would share in the vision of providing an exceptional dental experience for individuals and their families as well as having a positive impact on our community.

Orthodontics

Bloom Expert Panelist Dr. Dawn StultzDawn Stultz, DDS, MS  My name is Dawn Stultz and I am the orthodontist at The Family Dental Center.  I have had the privilege of being part of The Family Dental Center team since 2001.  After obtaining my dental degree from the University of Iowa, I completed a residency in orthodontics where I received a Masters Degree and Certificate in orthodontics. I enjoy providing orthodontic treatment for children, teens, and adults.  Each person is unique and his or her treatment options are tailored to his or her individual needs and desires.

Pediatric Psychology

Bloom Expert Panelist Dr. Matt O'BrienMatthew O’Brien, PhD, BCBA-D  Dr. O’Brien is a clinic pediatric psychologist and behavior analyst at the Center for Disabilities and Development at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.  He completed his doctorate in Psychological and Quantitative Foundations from the University of Iowa and completed postdoctoral fellowships in neuropsychology and behavioral psychology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  Dr. O’Brien currently directs the BioBehavioral Day Treatment Clinic and sees patients in Neurobehavioral and Neuropsychological Assessment Clinics.  His research is focused on functional assessment of challenging behavior in individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Physical Therapy

Bloom Expert Panelist Beth DessnerBeth A. Dessner, PT, DPT, OCS  Dr Dessner is a private practice physical therapist with 28 years of experience.  Her hometown is Decorah, IA, and she received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa.  She went on to complete her physical therapy training and her Master’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis.  She later returned to school to complete her transitional doctorate in physical therapy from Des Moines University in 2009.   Beth is currently in a manual therapy fellowship program and she has completed specialized training in treating pelvic floor dysfunction in both women and men.  She recently expanded her private practice, Integrated Therapy Specialists, PC to North Liberty, with the goal of treating more patients with pelvic floor conditions (Incontinence, pelvic pain, pre and post-natal issues).  Beth is the mother of 2 adult children, she is a level 1 certified Cross Fit coach, a hot yoga lover, and a triathlete.

Safety and Injury Prevention

Bloom Expert Panelist Pam HoogerwerfPam Hoogerwerf, BS  Pam grew up in Iowa and attended the University of Iowa where she became a die-hard Hawkeye on the cheerleading squad. She majored in broadcasting journalism and health promotion but first went to work for United Airlines as a Flight Attendant. Her fiancé and now husband  lured her back to Iowa City where she began her career within University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She transitioned over to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in 2008 where she began her role as Director of Community Outreach and Injury Prevention. She has obtained special certification in injury prevention and is a certified child passenger safety technician. One of the programs she manages is the Safety Store, where customers can obtain assistance with children’s injury prevention products including car seats, BOB strollers, HALO swaddles, cabinet locks and bike helmets. She is passionate about keeping kids safe and enjoys traveling the state promoting messages related to that. She has been married for 30 years and has a 27 year old daughter who recently was married and a 15 year old son so she feels like she has been a mom for a long time. She loves all kinds of fitness and being outdoors.

Financial Planning

Bloom Expert Panelist Jeff RudolphJeff Rudolf, AAMS  Jeff Rudolph is a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones and holds an Accredited Asset Management Specialist designation.  He serves on the Board of Directors for the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation and is a current member of the Iowa City Noon Lions Club. Jeff and his Senior Branch Office Administrator, Temple Hiatt, have been serving the Iowa City area since 2002.  They enjoy working with clients who know they need help and value professional advice.  By understanding what is important to you and your family, they provide personalized service to help you identify and reach your goals.

Kaitlyn Swaim
Kaitlyn is the owner of Cedar Rapids Moms Blog and is an Iowa girl who has been married to her husband, Joshua, since 2007! She’s a busy work-at-home mama to their 5 children: 3 girls and 2 boys! A true Hawkeye, she graduated from the University of Iowa with her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, something that comes in handy on a daily basis while trying to raise 5 kids! Her favorite things to do include spending time with her family, cheering on the Hawkeyes, reading a good book, shopping (of course!), and checking out all the activities the Corridor has to offer!
