The Power of Positivity

A smile.

A happy hello.

A thoughtful compliment.

On the surface, these are simple things. They each only take a short moment to dispense. But the power they can wield is immeasurable.

A smile given to someone who is feeling a bit down can brighten that person’s whole day and give them a reason to smile back.

A happy hello given to someone who is frustrated can help them look beyond their current situation with optimism.

A thoughtful compliment given to someone who is feeling less than their best can give them confidence to feel as amazing as they truly are.

I see it every time I go to the mall with my daughter. She loves smiling, waving, and saying hi to everyone she sees. And everyone she says hi to grins from ear to ear and says hi back, sometimes with a little giggle in their voice. Okay, it may have something to do with the fact that she’s a cute little four-year-old with a quirky sense of style, but I think we can all take something away from her regardless.

She doesn’t worry what someone might think of her. She isn’t trying to get something in return. She’s purely loving life and spreading that love to other people, all with just a quick smile, hello, and sometimes even a compliment if she really likes what you’re wearing. It takes her a fraction of a second and she continues on her way, leaving a sense of positivity in her wake.

I feel it every time my son smiles at me for no other reason than I looked at him. No matter how grumpy, down, or crummy I feel, one simple smile from him immediately brightens my mood!

I want to challenge all of you to embrace the power of positivity. Think positively every day. If you’re on Facebook, start your day by posting a positive affirmation, motivating meme, or empowering quote.

When you’re waiting in the check-out line at Target, turn to the person behind you, and smile and say hello.

If you see someone rockin’ an awesome hair-do or stylish capris, tell them! If you see a frazzled mom in sweats and a messy bun, tell her how cute her kids are.

Not only will you spread positivity and good vibes to those around you, but you’ll also find yourself feeling more positive and happier in return!

And let’s be honest, we can all agree that this world needs more positivity!
