MLK Day Activities and Events in the Iowa City Area

On Monday, we celebrate the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There are several service activities planned in the area to commemorate Dr. King’s dream for racial and economic justice. 

MLK Day Unity in the Community March

 The community celebrations will kick off with a Unity March in Iowa City. Line-up will begin at Eastdale Plaza at 8:45 a.m. and the March will start at 9 a.m. Participants will walk from Eastdale to Mercer Park for the other MLK celebration events.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

Celebrations continue at Mercer Park with
-Performances by the Jones Academy for Performing and other community groups
-Free haircuts courtesy of Transformations Salon and Spa
-Free lunch served at noon
-Family-friendly volunteer projects
-Children’s activities and more.

Donations of outerwear apparel such as hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks will be accepted to benefit area shelters.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration at Bethel AME Church

Martin Luther King Day Celebration & Public Reading of “I Have a Dream”

Coralville Public Library
5-6 p.m.

The Coralville Public Library will present a public reading of Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream Speech” at 5 p.m. on Monday, January 15 in the Library Rotunda. Readers will include a variety of representatives from local government (including yours truly!), library partners, and community groups, including the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa, the Consultation of Religious Communities, and others who work to make Dr. King’s vision of racial and economic justice a reality.

Discounted Admission to the African American Museum of Iowa

The African American Museum of Iowa is a statewide museum dedicated to preserving, exhibiting, and teaching Iowa’s African American history. The museum educates more than 30,000 citizens each year through museum tours, traveling exhibits, research services, youth and adult education programs, and community and fundraising events. 

On January 21st the Museum will be offering discounted admission at $1.00 per person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to honor Dr. King. In addition, the Museum is celebrating Dr. King’s message of peace by collaborating with Veterans for Peace Chapter #169 to create and decorate Peace Poles throughout the day. 

 


 

Meghann
Meghann is the mom of 5 kids. She is a Lecturer at the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication and an Owner/Partner at Brand Driven Digital. Meghann was elected to the Coralville City Council in 2017 and is currently serving her first term. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Coralville Community Food Pantry (Vice-Chair) and on the DVIP Board of Directors. She is also a member of Johnson County's Juvenile Justice and Youth Development Policy Board. Meghann is passionate about her family, her community, and is a proud pop culture nerd.
