7 Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month with your Daughter

March is Women’s History Month. Centered around International Women’s Day on March 8, we celebrate 31 days of all the inspirational women before us and the influential women of today. With the #MeToo movement, I feel it is more important than ever to teach my daughter equality and empowerment. We have an opportunity to change the world today for a better life our children will enjoy. I want my daughter to understand why that is so important to me.

Ways to celebrate Women's History Month and International Women's Day

Recognizing the women of the world should last more than just the month of March, so here are some fun and easy things for you to do with your daughters, nieces, or friends to celebrate. Happy Women’s Day, and remember:

Empowered women, empower women.

7 Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month

Read Books

Sit together and read books about inspirational women. Here is a selection of books for different ages:

Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History by Vashti Harrison
She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World by Chelsea Clinton
The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch
The Little Book of Little Activists by Penguin Young Readers
The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin
Dear Girl by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Paris Rosenthal
Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo.

Send a Thank You

Write, text, Facebook message, or email some thank-yous together to show your appreciation for the women in your life. Your daughter can thank a teacher, coach, mentor, friend, or family member. Let those women know they are doing great things and inspiring young women around them.

Wear a Graphic Tee

There are lots of T-shirts out there sporting fun phrases and quotes. “Nevertheless she Persisted,” “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for,” and “The Future is Female,” are some great current ones. You can either order these online, or make them yourself. Sport some fun quotes and inspire the women around you!

Give a Compliment

A random act of kindness or kind words can make someone’s day. As women we all need to encourage each other, so teach your daughter to speak up when she sees someone doing admirable things. As you are out in public try both giving sincere compliments to people you see doing kind things, or just simply to put a smile on someone’s face.

Watch Videos

There are lots of YouTube videos and documentaries out there. Get a warm blanket and some hot chocolate and sit down and watch a few inspiring videos. Emma Watson’s UN speech on gender equality and The Women’s List are good ones to start with.

Make a Memory Book

Looking for an activity to do together? Make a scrapbook of women in your family past and present. It’s a good time to look up your family history and see where you came from. Write down stories of the women in your family and collect pictures. Going back and looking through your book will be something you can enjoy year-round.

Go on a Mommy-daughter Date

Spend a day together doing all your favorite things. Make her feel special and celebrate all your daughter has accomplished. If you need help thinking of ideas, you could try out some of these art experiences, choose one of these evening and weekend activities, or just enjoy a meal together (use the Kids Eat Free guide!). Let her know she can be anything she wants to be, and you will be there all along the way!

Take some time this month to be intentional about celebrating women and our incredible history!
