A Mom’s Guide to Hancher: Six Ways to Enjoy the 2018-2019 Season

We are truly lucky to have a world-renowned multidisciplinary performing arts presenter just a hop and a skip from our homes. Hancher is the cultural hub of the University of Iowa campus and a beloved part of the Iowa City corridor, bringing an endless line-up of world-class dance, music, and theater to our community. The upcoming season does not stray from this tradition; it’s packed full of fantastic entertainment for every occasion!

Here are a few suggestions for you and your family as we prepare to celebrate and kick off the 2018-2019 season at Hancher Auditorium.

Date Nights

What: Any Club Hancher event
When: The 2018-2019 season will have four Club Hancher events including Storm Large (singer) on October 18, Kinan Azmeh’s CityBand (a blend of jazz, classical, and traditional music of Syria) on November 7, Banda Magda (band with a world of musical influences) on February 2, and Kaia Kater (Americana/folk/bluegrass) on March 30.
Why: Check out the late performances in the Club Hancher lineup for an awesome date night! Club Hancher events are intimate performances which have been conceived, created, and refined for a club setting. They are held in Strauss Hall, which is a smaller space within Hancher. These performances feature table seating and concessions for sale. The artists do back-to-back performances at 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.–the later show is when they really let loose!

Family Outings

What: The Cashore Marionettes
When: Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28, 2018
Why: If you’re looking to introduce your children to Hancher, then check out The Cashore Marionettes to redefine the idea of a puppet show! This is a wonderful, moving show in a small space (this is also held in Strauss Hall) and will feature the intricately carved and masterfully manipulated marionettes of Joseph Cashore. We recommend this performance for children in second grade or above.
Cost: $25/Adults, $10/Youth

What: They Called Her Vivaldi
When: Sunday, March 10, 2019
Why: The young people in your life will love the music, the characters, and the encouragement to follow their dreams. This play will delight middle school children and adults of all ages.

Ladies’ Night Out

What: L.A. Theatre Works production of Steel Magnolias
When: Friday, November 2, 2018
Why: What’s not to love about this classic story of friendship and standing strong in the face of loss?! The diverse cast will take you inside Truvy’s beauty shop in a small Southern town where six women find their lives increasingly intertwined… it’s a Ladies’ Night winner!
Cost: $25 – $45/Adult

What: Alsarah and the Nubatones
When: Saturday, November 17, 2018
Why: Alsarah is an amazing Sudanese vocalist and her band, the Nubatones, is exceptional. This might not be a traditional ladies’ night out pick, but this concert features a fierce woman making stunning music that has broad appeal, so we love it!
Cost: $20 – $35/Adult

Alsarah and the Nubatones will perform on November 17, 2018.

Broadway In Our Own Backyard

What: Les Misérables
When: December 4-9, 2018 (8 shows)
Why: Broadway right here Iowa City is a real treat, and Les Misérables is the most performed show in Hancher history, so we’re excited to see the new staging of this classic musical.
Cost: $50-$110/Adult, $45-80/Youth

Hancher on a Budget

What: Steep Canyon Rangers
When: Friday, September 14, 2018
Why: This is the band that helped Steve Martin and Martin Short open the new Hancher building. They are a great bluegrass band that everyone can enjoy. Plus, who doesn’t love a free outdoor concert?! Grab the lawn chairs and blankets, pack up the kids, and go enjoy the show on Hancher’s lawn.
Cost: FREE

The Canadian Brass, “Christmas Time is Here” performance will be on November 30, 2018.

For the Holidays

What: The Canadian Brass, Christmas Time is Here
When: Friday, November 30, 2018
Why: This will be a wonderful concert that everyone in the family will love! The quintet will bring the sparkle of the holidays to the stage.
Cost: $35-$55/Adult, $10-$27/Youth

Tickets for Hancher’s 2018/2019 season will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Tickets may be purchased, starting on that day, in person at the Hancher Box Office, by phone at 800-HANCHER / (319) 335-1160, or online from Hancher’s website.
